On July 15th, I was lucky enough to attend ‘Brew at the Zoo’ with my fabulous cohort, Beth “BYOBates”. She scored last minute tickets to the sold out event and I was just happy that it was scheduled on a Thursday. Darn weekend job, pfft. The event was touted as a “Young Professionals Beer Tasting Event” and was sponsored by the Friends of the National Zoo.
Yay! Today is June 8th, 2010 and my very first beer review for ‘Chicks Love Beer’! I’m so excited! And a little veklempt. (Single tear)
For my very first entry, I chose a Delirium brew from Belgium. I went with the ‘Nocturnum’. Mostly because of the cute faux crockery style bottle and the little pink elephant. That and the fact that the friendly guy at the ‘Frenchman Corner’ in Culpeper assured me that I would like it after a lengthy discussion as to what ‘the Lightweight’ digs in a brew.
It is a very tasty ale, indeed. Produced by Huyghe Brewery in Melle/Ghent Belgium, this is not a cheap beer. A four pack of the stuff will run you $24.99. It’s well worth it. I found the nose to smack of blackstrap molasses. The finish was sweet and molasses-y as well. Hints of caramel, flowers and a certain amount of fruitiness rounded out the finish. Not too hoppy and certainly not bitter. Everything I would expect from a well crafted Belgian. The amount of alcohol is fairly high at 8.5%, but it doesn’t taste ‘hot’. I gave this beer a 4 out of 5 rating.
I hope that you enjoyed my very first review as much as I enjoyed writing it! Love, ‘the Lightweight’
