Ales, Beer Reviews

Review: Good Juju? Yes Please!

Now that summer is almost over, I’ve been reminiscing on one of my favorite summer traditions.  I love, more than anything, to load a cooler up with a huge variety of beers and play a sort of “brewery Russian roulette” when we get to our party destination.  Never knowing what might come out of that cooler makes beer taste better in my opinion.  Also, I’m absolutely  famous for purchasing beer (and wine, for that matter) solely based on how cool the label looks.  This purchasing strategy has gotten me in to tasting trouble on more than one occasion.  However, this summer my label buying and my Russian roulette worked out to my advantage.

For the 3rd of July celebration, I happened to purchase a single bottle of the Left Hand Brewing Company‘s Good Juju beer.  My first taste of Good Juju couldn’t have been more epic.  There I was, sitting in the backyard of a beautiful old 100+ year old home, watching fireworks explode above my head when the first trickle of that gingery pale ale slid down my tongue and down my throat.  It literally sent shivers up my spine!  Since I was playing my little beer roulette game, I had no idea what I had pulled from the cooler (especially since I was more focused on the fireworks than scrounging for a better known beer amongst the ice) and I was more than pleasantly surprised with the pick that came out.

Good Juju is a herb/spice ale (basically a pale ale with a little more punch than your regular brew).  Left Hand Brewing Company has found the perfect way to blend organic ginger root with their hops and malts.  I recommend it enjoyed ice cold… this isn’t a beer that’s going to go over well at room temp.  The alcohol content is in the nice “normal” range, which means that for us “lightweights” we can certainly enjoy more than one without worrying about a beer hangover the next day! This beer is the perfect antidote to a boring, sweltering hot day.  The only downside to this fantastic beer is that it’s part of Left Hand’s seasonal varieties.  So, if you’re like me and want to reminisce about the summer all through the winter you’d better head out and stock up now.
