Love Me. Love My Dog.

This hour is sponsored by Melinda Moore, in memory of her beloved dog Liberty Redpath. Thank you so much, Melinda, for supporting this wonderful cause.

Mark and I don’t have kids of the 2-legged variety. Instead, we’ve chosen to fill our home with furry kids that shed on the furniture, share our bed at night and occasionally poop and/or pee (sometimes both!) on the floor. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is the small dog brood. One pup, Joy, was a foster that found her forever home!

I decided at a fairly young age that I didn’t want children and I was lucky enough to find a man who felt the same. And while he didn’t have a dog as a child, he instantly fell in love with my little black Chow, Sushi. And so it was – the house was to be filled with pups.

We recently bought a house on 10 acres in Front Royal so that the dogs would have more room to run. We chose a 4-door SUV so it would be easier for them to get into the car. We bought a couch with removable covers so they could lay on it and we could easily clean off the goo in the laundry. It always makes me laugh to think about the decisions we’ve made, both menial and life changing, on behalf of our dogs.

We have 6 dogs now – Mickey, Willy & Katie (all Jack Russells) and Hugo, Bruno (who I can hear barking as I type) and George (all mastiffs) – and we love them all for different reasons. I’ll also mention that we adopted 3 cats – Tangy, Spicy & Zesty – who don’t fratranize with the dogs but also live pretty pampered lives.

I have many friends who have chosen dogs over children for a variety of reasons. And it makes me wonder, is this becoming a trend? It’s fair to say that we also have a lot of friends that have kids and dogs, but I think that it might be an even split between the two groups.

However you choose to fill your home with happiness, I think that it’s always nice to see a wagging tail and a get a big, slobbery doggy kiss when I walk in the door after a long day.

MORE SWAG! This hour we’re giving away an ID Tag Mover: Simply loop the Tag Mover over the collar and snap using the mini quick release buckle. If you want to change collars or remove the tags it’s as easy as a snap of the buckle! This prize was generously donated by A Little Unique! Thanks!

Our dogs are our “kids”, our family. Sadly due to the loss of our 2 girls Blondie and Rita both to adenocarcinoma in 2009, we currently are a one dog family. But nothing is better that the happy dance and toy presentation that I receive when I get home from work. Angus is a great greeter!!

My husband and I also have only 4-legged, furry children! I can relate to making household buying decisions based on their needs and wants…we went to countless furniture stores to find the perfect sectional sofa that would fit the two of us and the dogs comfortably!

We just bought a minivan so we could fit our now White Dog Army of me and my three Reskie sisters and brother! Our lives here are all directly connected to momma and dad’s Angel sheltie, Sheena, who died of liver cancer, sending us to them! Keep writing. We will be back to check in. Good luck!

My wife and I also only have the ‘4-legged’ variety of children and wouldn’t have it any other way. We have 5 dogs and that’s just the beginning, which reminds me, I need to go feed the horses, chickens, and rabbits!

We are in the same category. Our “children” wear doggie sweaters! I wonder if there is any research into what seems like the growing trend choosing doggie children over having a baby? Or at least putting off having kids for a while and being content for the moment with canine kids! I have many friends who have kids and wouldn’t trade the experience of being a mom for the world though!
