I’ve always been a dog lover and many times prefer dogs over some people. =) So it was natural for me to get involved in dog rescue as a volunteer. During my time with rescue groups in the area I was amazed at how much good they were doing finding forever homes for homeless dogs. But it got me thinking – what happens to these dogs once they are adopted? It’s kind of like bringing home a new baby – there’s no fool proof manual for becoming a dog mom or dad. In 2003, I founded GoodDogz.org, a nonprofit organization that supports new adopters through online resources, workshops and events. Our goal is to keep adopted dogs stay in their new homes so that they don’t bounce back into a shelter due to a behavioral or training issue that could be resolved. We also support metro DC rescue groups by hosting two multi-group adoption events each year – Home 4 the Holidays in November and the Pet Fiesta coming up on May 7 at the Reston Town Center. These events enable rescue groups to bring adoptable dogs to a family friendly event where they could potentially meet their forever families.
Over the past eight years we estimate that we’ve helped over 1000 dogs find homes through our events and have helped countless adopters with behavioral and training issues. We have been very fortunate to receive endless support from the local rescue, business and pet community including NOVADog Magazine.
We are always looking for volunteers, so please check out our opportunities and let us know if you want to get involved!
